Which Are You?

I came across this poem recently and thought it was worth sharing.  I LOVE it.  I think it rings true.   I challenge you to read it and answer the questions for yourself.

Which Are You?
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

THERE are two kinds of people on earth to-day;
Just two kinds of people, no more, I say.

Not the sinner and saint, for it's well understood,
The good are half bad, and the bad are half good.

Not the rich and the poor, for to rate a man's wealth,
You must first know the state of his conscience and health.

Not the humble and proud, for in life's little span,
Who puts on vain airs, is not counted a man.

Not the happy and sad, for the swift flying years
Bring each man his laughter and each man his tears.

No; the two kinds of people on earth I mean,
Are the people who lift, and the people who lean.

Wherever you go, you will find the earth's masses,
Are always divided in just these two classes.

And oddly enough, you will find too, I ween,
There's only one lifter to twenty who lean.

In which class are you? Are you easing the load,
Of overtaxed lifters, who toil down the road?

Or are you a leaner, who lets others share
Your portion of labor, and worry and care?

Well, now that you have read and contemplated.  What do you think of the poem?  What did you decide?  Which are you?

The Challenge Starts Today! Go!

I've got the Mr. in on the act and we are getting lean, mean and healthy together in February!

I've got a few meal plans together to make it easy and we are on our way.  He is even planning his eating at work!  I love it.

Anyone else tried this or planning to try it?

I've got several friends who have tried this and report great weight loss and wellness success.   I have done no sugar and no grains before but haven't given up the dairy too!  Should be fun!  Yes, fun...I love trying new recipes and ways of doing things to create a healthier lifestyle.

Get Fit Friday - I've Been Lost!!!

I've been lost in the unbelievably, yummy, gorge of snacks and chocolate!  LOL!  Ok..really that's not funny!  It seems that the hunger monster took hold of me...grabbed my hands, my heart and my mind and took me waaaaaaayyyyy to the bottom, where I could not see family or friends and NO ONE and NO THING could help me.

Well...nothing until by boobs popped out of the top of my bra!  Hahahaha!  Ok...really...that's not funny!  Over the past 3 weeks of my absence...I've gained a few pounds I think anywhere from 3-5lbs. I say, I think because I'm not so sure I'm trusting my scale but we'll see shortly.  Now, it truly was my boobs popping out that made me just stop and take notice.  My boobs always get the weight first and damn it...I am not buying bigger bras!  So...now, I'm awake and conscious again!  Whew!

I've started reading and sharing and again learning about peri-menopause, you know the years before menopause where you have the joy of experiencing quiet a few disturbing symptoms.  Well, guess what?  E xtreme hunger can be a sign of hormonal fluctuations.  I mean I've been a "man don't make me fight you over that last bite," kind of girl...LOL!  Ok...really...that's not funny!  I've been a mess.

Well, I survived.  A couple of pounds up.  A good dose of chocolate...loved every bite.  However, I never missed a date at the gym or a glass of water.  That's the good news.  The not so great news is now I've got to lose 18 or 20 lbs instead of 15 and my jar is empty.  LOL!  Ok..really...that's not funny!

I've again learned something about myself, I really do have a weight threshold.  I feel stuffed and tired.  Although, I haven't missed a day and enjoy my workouts...they are a bit tougher with only a few added pounds.  I seriously must've been living in a coma when I allowed myself to go all the way up to 285 lbs.  Whoa!

Well, I'm glad to say, I'm alive, I'm well, I'm here and I'm in control...again.

Until next week..be well, be healthy, BE STRONG!  This too shall pass!

It's Time for a Detox!!!

After a weekend with the girls and taking meds for my root canal and then for my crown lengthening I'm feeling very much like my body could use a good detox.

If you know me then you know, my preference is natural but sometimes we gotta do, what we gotta do...especially when it comes to pain and preventing infection.  So pop those pills I did.  Now it's time to give my liver a break and possibly jump start my next round of weight loss.

Detox???  Are you thinking about some crazy ass regimen, like drinking my calories all day long?  Well I'm not.  Guess what?   You can detoxify your body without starving or following some outrageous program or scarfing down handfuls of supplements!

"You’ll find that there’s no need for you to fast, subsist on juice or swallow a fistful of exotic supplements. Doing a healthy detox is mostly a matter of eliminating processed, heavy and potentially irritating foods and drinks from your diet for a number of days, and instead, taking in mostly fresh, organic produce; clean proteins; healthy fats; and pure water.
You thereby give your body the nutritional support it needs to heal  accumulated damage and to rid itself of toxic burdens.
Typical benefits include a marked increase in energy; accelerated healing; reduced puffiness, stuffiness, bloating and digestive distress; clearer skin and eyes; and even clearer-headed thinking."   Bahram Akradi, Experience Life Magazine
The plan we(dh is all in!) are going to follow is "The UltraSimple Slimdown."  You can find it here on the Experience Life web site.  Experience Life is one of my favorite magazines.

CONFESSION:  WE PLAN TO DO THE PREP WEEK FOR 2 WEEKS.  HOWEVER IN WEEK 2 WE WILL REMOVE THE OTHER ITEMS LISTED ON THE AVOID LIST...GLUTEN, DAIRY, CHEESE ETC.   JUST REMOVING PROCESSED FOODS, WHITE FLOUR, SUGAR, FAST FOODS MAKES FOR GREAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH!
I don't think this will be tough for us...since we have already cut out processed foods, white flour, white sugar from our household.  We don't have it in the house but we do occasionally indulge when we go out or are invited to other's homes, on the weekend...but not next week...gotta be strong!
I hope some of you will consider joining me.  I guarantee your body will thank you for it...barring any prohibitive health conditions.

NEXT WEEK WE START THE PREPARATION WEEK!  THEN THE TRUE DETOX THE FOLLOWING WEEK!  FOLLOW ALONG ALL WEEK HERE!
Please be sure to check with you doctor before starting any diet/healthy eating plan.  Remember, that I am NOT a doctor or nutritionist..these are simply things I have tried that worked for me.  Please be sure you check with your own doctor and/or nutrition counselors.

Before YOU Quit, TRY!

"Before you act, listen. Before you react, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try."

This layout features me and some of my scrapping buddies at our bi-annual Sistah Retreat.  During each retreat, there is a project and conversation about health and healing.  At this particular retreat the theme was "Forever Linked."  We are forever linked and we each created a link to a chain and then we connected the links.  There was a conversation about how we have touched each others lives and how it is important to care for ourselves and one another, do self exams and get mammorgrams.  We plan to retreat together for years to come!

Now that I've sparked your creativity, how about a little something to spark a bit of desire!  How would you like to own this fabulous "Fight Like a Girl" Kit from Glimpses.  It includes fabulous double-sided patterned papers, cool coordinating stickers and plenty of matching embellies! It's Like Crack to a Crackhead!

Many of you know that I subscribe to the no white flour, no white sugar movement.  I do NOT keep these items in my house.  Meaning I do not buy cookies, cakes, candies, breads, pastas made with these ingredients and keep them in my house.  As I've said before, these items are quite addictive.  You wouldn't put crack in the cabinet and expect a crackhead not to take a hit...why would you expect not to take a bite???

Anyway, although I haven't bought any for the house...I have allowed myself a few indulgences.  You know, buy a slice of cake here and there, an ice cream scoop etc.  Typically, as an after dinner treat...while at home.  Well, I found myself not sleeping well and feeling a bit more indigestion.  Not putting it all together, I enjoyed my weekend treats and sometimes weekday treats.  Well recently, I decided to go back to my more strict way of doing things, which for me means NO dessert, no eating after 7:30pm.  If I've got to have it...it's a treat when we are out once a week (typically on a weekend day) and now once again...I am sleeping like a baby!  And only after a few days.  I haven't had any sweets this week and just with that small adjustment I am sleeping very well and I awake energized and ready for the day.  Oh so worth it!

Know yourself and be willing to make the changes necessary to live a happier, healthier life!  Are you ready? Pick up my Are You Ready Guide for FREE!  Just subscribe to the iClassygirl email updates and I'll send you a free downloadable copy.  See top, right sidebar. EnJOY!

So, what is your crack?

Love your heart for your health

Part of my happiness is being creative.  Creating keeps my hands busy, which means I'm not eating.  Unlike many crafters who are sure to have chocolate, potato chips or cookies nearby, creating the need to eat whenever they craft and many adding unwanted pounds.   For me creative time, is a time that takes me away from eating and allows me the freedom from thoughts of food and the stresses of the day.

I created this in honor of Go Red for Women's Heart Health Day.  Each year online, at my local crops and in my personal life I do something to honor and share heart health information with women.  This is a picture of me wearing red and the paper shows the date...proof that I wore red on Go Red for Women's Heart Health Day!

It is my privilege and I feel my duty to share what I've learned with others.

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and I think we have to keep the conversation going so that more women are aware and educated. Hopefully, this will help more women to love themselves a bit more.

Love your heart!  Know your numbers: total cholesterol, HDL and LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, glucose, body mass index, waist size.  Knowing these numbers can help you to make informed decisions about your health and eating and make changes as necessary, to live a heart healthy life.

Healthy numbers are*:
Total Cholesterol - less than 200 mg/dL
LDL (bad cholesterol) -  less than 100 mg/dL is optimal, 100 to 129 mg/dL is near optimal, 130-159 mg/dL is borderline high
HDL (good cholesterol) - 50 mg/dL or higher
Triglycerides - less than 150 mg/dL
Blood Pressure - less than 120/80 mmHg
Fasting Glucose - less than 100 mg/dL
Body Mass Index(BMI) - less than 25%
Waist Circumference - less than 35 inches
Exercise - Minimum of 30 minutes on most days

Love your heart. Love yourself.

Build Your Own Self-Confidence

A healthy dose of self-confidence is one of the key ingredients to living a successful, mentally healthy life. But you don’t have to fish for compliments from your friends and family; while compliments are always nice, you can also be your own cheering section.

Learn To Stand Up For Yourself
You know that nagging feeling you have inside every time you keep quiet when you should speak up for yourself? It’s there for a reason. It’s there to remind you that if you don’t speak up for yourself when you have the chance, you may regret it.
• Start standing up for yourself when it comes to the little things and eventually you’ll learn to handle those bigger issues.
• For example, when your lunch order gets mixed up, don’t just sit back and eat it as is. Send it back politely and ask for the correct order.
• Eventually, you’ll learn to handle yourself confidently so you can graciously tackle that situation at work or with a friend.

Check Your Body Language
Whether you like it or not, first impressions do count.
• Stand tall and practice good posture when you walk into a room.
• Imagine that you're being pulled by a string going all the way from your toes to the top of your head.
• Carry yourself with confidence, make eye contact, smile, and never fold your arms.

Get Physically Active
Any physical exercise such as walking, running, dancing or swimming will make you feel better about yourself.
• Exercise releases all those good hormones that make you feel happy.
• Working towards a fitness goal can help teach yourself that you can take charge and achieve what you want.

Wear Properly Fitting Clothes
Wearing sloppily-fitting clothes to hide flaws is one of the biggest mistakes people who want to lose weight make.
• The truth is that wearing ill-fitting clothes only serves to accentuate the very areas you're trying to cover up.
• On the other hand, jeans or pants that fit too tightly make you seem uncomfortable and unsure, especially if you’re constantly tugging at them.
• If you wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and look nice, you’ll feel more confident in your own skin.

Remind Yourself Often of Your Good Qualities
Do you know what your best qualities are?
• Think of what you would say to someone if they asked you about yourself.
•Make a list of at least five good qualities and remind yourself of them daily – especially when you feel like you’re having a not-so-good day.

Surround Yourself With Supportive People
You wouldn’t pick an apple with poison in it, so don’t pick friends who are toxic to your confidence.
• The last thing you need when you feel down is to be surrounded by negative people with nothing enriching to say.
• Friends who say things like, “If that happened to me I would have died!” or, “All men are dogs” or “You’ll never be able to get that kind of job” are not the best friends to have.

Always Be A Student
It’s never too late to learn a new language, take a dance class, get caught up on the latest computer skills, or take up a trade.
• Learning will improve your confidence in yourself and your ability to succeed.
• In addition, passing on what you’ve learned to someone else is even better.

Be Good To Yourself
Reflect on the things you say to yourself or think about yourself when you make a mistake. If you wouldn’t say those things to your closest friend, then don’t say them to yourself.
• We’re often very hard on ourselves, yet we treat other people with more compassion than we do ourselves.
• Next time you are about to get down on yourself, think of yourself as your own best friend and encourage yourself.

Always remember one essential truth: if you don’t take care of, nuture, support and love yourself, then it will be next to impossible for anyone else to truly do the same. Also, caring for others starts with respecting and caring for yourself.
Have a happy and healthy week.

Go Red for Women's Heart Health!

February is American Heart Month and tomorrow is National Wear Red Day! And I encourage you to Go RED for Women's Heart Health.
Mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts — every day, women are dying at the rate of almost one per minute. Show your support for the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red on Friday, Feb. 4th. Be it a red dress, scarf, sweater or even a red dress pin. It’s an easy, powerful way to raise awareness of the No. 1 killer of women - heart disease.
Protecting your heart isn’t always our number one priority - but it should be.  Heart disease is the number one killer women, and African Americans are at greater risk of heart disease than any other ethnic group.
Instead of simply focusing on health numbers that are easy to measure such as weight, focus your attention on these seven tips to boost your heart health and prevent a deadly disease.
1. Be More Active. Lack of exercise is on the American Heart Association’s list of major risk factors for heart disease. Some of the other risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, and high blood cholesterol. Exercise is not only a weapon against heart disease; it reduces the risk of breast cancer, obesity, colon cancer, stress, depression and anxiety.
The average person should exercise 3 to 5 times a week for 30 at moderate intensity, but just by adding an additional 30 minutes of everyday activity such as taking the stairs instead of an elevator or biking to work, you can achieve significant health benefits. For best results, incorporate weight training into your exercise routine 2 to 3 times a week.  Resistance training with resistance bands or light to moderate weight lifting builds muscle, helps decrease body fat and improves your cholesterol levels.
2. Keep Inflammation In Check. Keep inflammation at bay by increasing your intake of fish, chicken and vegetable protein such as beans.  Red meats such as steak and hamburgers should be limited to a couple of times a month because of their high saturated fat content. Having a good balance of protein, carbohydrate and health fat will help promote the production of anti-inflammatory compounds known as eicosanoids.  Eicosanoids help prevent hardening of the arteries.
3. Spice It Up. Enhance your meals with garlic, ginger and onions whenever possible.  These herbs are known to be beneficial for circulation.
4. Limit Your Sodium & Increase Your Potassium. Increasing your intake of potassium while limiting sodium can reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack. Potassium-rich foods include bananas, cantaloupes and avocados.
5. Reduce The Bad Fats & Add More Good Fats.  Bad fats are those labeled saturated or hydrogenated, vegetable oil, corn oil, shortening, margarine and cottonseed oil, as well as those in red meat, dairy products and peanuts. Healthy fats are fish oil, olive oil, canola oil, hemp oil, and coconut oil.  Despite popular belief, using a small amount of real butter is better for your heart than margarine.
6. Give Soy A Chance.  Soy products are very beneficial for heart health.  Although controversial, they have been found useful in reducing cholesterol levels. However, you should limit soy intake to once a day to avoid gas.  If you find it triggers gas, bloating or other digestive discomfort, soy may not be for you.
7. Be Conscious of Cholesterol. The best foods for reducing cholesterol include garlic, oat bran, apple, flaxseed, turmeric and fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Surprisingly, it's probably the carbohydrates in your diet that are raising your cholesterol, not the fats. So limit your consumption of white processed flours, pastries, cakes, sugary candies, and deserts to no more than once a week.
In addition to all of the above tips, also make sure to visit your doctor for an annual exam - this includes a cholesterol check.
Have a happy and healthy day!
